.Net Jonesie - Beware of IE 7
A simple programmers blog

# Tuesday, October 17, 2006

Darryl and others have mentioned recently about the impending doom that is IE 7 :] If you are like me and decided not to use it - for one reason or another - then beware that it is very likley to be automatically installed on your favourite computer weather you want it or not.

Now, dont get me wrong, I like IE7 but during the early betas I had an issue with it and Visual Studio Team Suite so I haven't used it on my work machine since then.  I do use it at home though and it works fine, but from a user POV I don't think it works any better than IE6.  From a dev POV I've just realised that I haven't done any testing on my sites (personal or otherwise) so I should probably stop blogging and get testing!

Anyways, my main gripe is that this is rolling out as a critical (or at least high priority) update so most users will get it without asking for it.  I can understand the justification for doing this - it does fix a lot of potential security issues so it would fall into that category - but I can see this causing some problems for a lot of people.

Peter I have to disagree.. I have been using IE7 for a long time now. In the beginning around jan/feb there were still some issues but from around april/may I haven't been using anything else.
As for the dev POV I'd say I welcome the upgrade to IE7 because finally you can use css properly in a site.. like min-height, float etc all these things don't crap up your design anymore
For pages I build I have to spend about 30% more time on css when i have to keep IE6 in mind

So that is a dev POV :)

Its one of those things where you are damned if you do and damned if you dont.

If we didn't put it out we'd leave lots of end users running an out of date and at risk of bugs that just dont exist in IE7 (note that I'm not saying anything about the state of IE7 - only that which is already well documented in IE6).

If we do put it out like this we get hassled by the techies who haven't tested their site yet, or those who are sensitive about downloading updates for whatever reason

In this case we've chosen to take the secure route over the please the rest route... And, predictably we cant please everyone.
